One of my favorite genres is historical fiction. Reading books that take place during a true historical period, but with fictional characters, is a good way for me to learn about the events that have shaped the world I live in. The books in this month’s picks are stories with strong, yet tender hearted characters who lived through severe poverty brought on by The Great Depression, the Syrian War, and slavery. Their circumstances, overwhelming and hopeless at times, did not crush their spirits, deplete their stamina or cause them to quit. Instead, they found ways to survive.
